Gua Sha is a healing technique used in China by practitioners of Traditional Medicine, in both the clinical setting and in homes. It is also getting more and more popular amongst the Western manual therapists. Gua Sha is a very powerful and effective technique. It stimulates the blood flow and the lymphatic system, helps to drain toxins and excessive liquids from the tissues, provides relief from muscular pain and stiffness.

In Gua Sha, a practitioner scrapes your skin with short or long strokes to stimulate microcirculation of the soft tissue, which increases blood flow. They make these strokes with a smooth-edged instruments - Gua Sha massage tool. The practitioner applies massage oil to your skin, and then uses the tool to repeatedly scrape your skin in a downward motion. The treatment is not supposed to be painful, but it results in the appearance of small red spot called "sha", that fade in 2 to 3 days.

Gua sha is generally performed on a person's back, buttocks, neck, arms, and legs. A gentle version of it exists for the face. Your practitioner may apply mild pressure, and gradually increase intensity to determine how much force you can handle.

Gua Sha can help with various conditions ranging from muscular pain and stiffness to migraines and perimenopausal syndrome. This technique may appear straightforward and simple, but it should only be performed by a trained practitioner. This ensures a safe, proper treatment.
